Evaluation Question 4

Evaluation Question 4

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stage?

For the development of our music video to be successful we have to use new media technologies’, this allows us to engage with our audience whether we use these technologies during construction, research, planning or for the evaluation. Although when we consider technology we assume that each technology is digital but when we were making our video the majority of the technology was digital but there were some technology’s that weren’t digital
In terms of hardware we used computers, cameras, tripods, phones and an Ipad throughout the project. We primarily used the film equipment and computers, this was useful for the research and construction of our music video, as we had to film multiple focus groups and tasks testing out theories, this was effective as the equipment was of a high standard so our video was able to be a high quality. We also used our Ipad’s and Phones during the assignment I used my ipad a lot throughout as a way to check for direction’s also I used it to listen to the song, originally when I was the one who was going to be the actor I would listen to the song and sing in front of the mirror and lip synch so I could tell whether or not it was convincing or not. When filming we used our phones to listen to the song so the lip singing was successful, this was effective as it allowed us to imitate the song without it looking odd, in some way it worked as a type of karaoke. We also used a digital camera to take pictures for our digipak, this was really great as we were able to take really nice quality pictures and they all looked really professional, the camera was effective as the photos looked professional, as we wanted them to look. I mostly used this type of technology for planning, construct and evaluation
In terms of software we used quite a lot of programming to achieve high standards for our digipak and video. We used programming such as Photoshop, Final cut, Word, Power point and Paint, for the construction of the video and digipak the software used the most used was Photoshop and Final cut, this was because they are both editing software one for videos and the other for pictures. We had to be really particular with our video and digipak as they should both have the same theme but be totally different, the visuals in the video cannot be present in the digipak as then it wouldn’t be believable. We also use some more basic programming such as word, Paint and Power point. I used word to write most of my evaluation so I could know that all they answers were grammatically correct, this is effective as it allows you to make the most of your blog.  I used Power point to present some of my work as power point is a good source for presenting not only is it simple it makes your work look professional. I also used paint although I didn’t used paint that much I would use it for screen shots to be able to paste and crop them, this was useful as I then didn’t have to show the full screen, I was able to show what I wanted people to see. I mostly used this software for my research, construction and evaluation.
Throughout the year we used multiple websites for many things such as the research, planning and evaluation. I used websites such as Prezi, Slide share, word it out, blogger, wall wisher/ padlet and you tube and many more. When writing for blogger you get bored of writing like it is a word document and you want to present your work better and more creatively, therefore we turn toward more websites that offer this like Prezi, word it out and padlet these and many more, all these websites are effective as they are more engaging to the public and the more engaging the more people will look at it. With websites like slide share they just allows you to share your Power point because you cant embed a Power point into blogger without using a website that changes the formatting, this is effective as it is another way of interesting displaying your work. You tube is another website that is used throughout the assignment as it is another way of documenting and showing our work to the public, our videos and other minor tasks went onto You tube allowing us to see people s perceptions or how popular videos can get. Physically making videos allows the public to put a face to the blogger rather than just being behind a computer screen.
Overall Technology has played a big part in our project in every aspect, whether this is research, planning, construction or the evaluation.

A music videos success criteria

Ultimately a music video is made to attract viewers and therefore listeners, these are called music promotion videos. There are multiple ways in which professionals and the public can tell whether or not the music video is successful or not. These are :
  1. Newspaper Articles and Tv reports: To identify whether the video is successful or not you have to ask your self what are the Newspapers or Tv are saying about the music video, you also have to ask whether their reviews are good or bad. Labels or the artists managers consider any publicity as good publicity therefore they are open to any type whether or not it is good or bad they can use it to their advantage.
  2. Channels and Music channels: Music channels are a good way to promote and distribute songs and music videos, a way you can tell whether or not a song is successful on a music channel is by the number of times the song is played, the more frequently the more successful the lesser means it is less popular.
  3. Music charts: The charts are mostly what the public follow or look towards for good music, depending on whether the song is on the top or bottom it shows its success  and therefore the interest of the public. If the song is in the top 10 in the chart it is considered successful but if it is in the 100's it is considered not successful.
  4. Sales- CD and downloads: Although CD sales have decreased now due to the increase in online downloading, CD sales definitely showed the popularity of either a certain single or album therefore showing the popularity of the product. But as the online downloads has been introduced there has now been ways to illegally download your music this means that we don't really know accurately how many versions have been sold therefore we don't know who is popular because the numbers would probably be higher if the downloads were all legally downloaded.
  5. Youtube: On Youtube you can usually tell if a song or video is popular by how many views they have on the video, this is how many times someone has searched and clicked on the song, this shows statistically how many people have watched the video. for example the most viewed video on Youtube is PSY's  Gangnam style with 1,948,947,171 views  and the second is Justin Bieber's Baby. this shows the importance of youtube on a artists and a songs popularity.
  6. Word of mouth (WOM): This is basically when people talk about the product in this case the song or music video, the popularity is based on how many people are talking/spreading the word about it whether or not it is good or bad. This is what happened for many artists but most recently Miley Cyrus.
  7. Publicity: And finally it all just comes to one more way, Publicity, if a song or video is thought to be successful the record company will hire a marketting company to publicise the music video or song, and you will see advertisements everywhere, bilboards, TV and many more. for example Christina Perri- Human.

Narrative Theory (TBC)

When considering narrative we have to analyze our own Music video as it is apart of our Evaluation questions therefore we have to always link what we are learning in some way to  our music videos.

Narrative
Like with the thrillers we did last year a Narrative is the way the story is organized, it's the plot. The different parts of the narrative are fundamental to the successfulness of the plot:
  • Time: This is whether or not the media type run chronologically for example it could be weeks, months, or years. this all depends on whether the person behind the making of the media type wanted their product to span in realtime or not, Real time is the time span is the same as the audiences  for example a film can be a 1 hour 30 minutes long if the film is in real time that film's events take place in an hour 30 but if it is not the film can make jumps in time it can go from weeks to years. Some films that use real time are Run lola Run and Before Sunset both film's events take place within a day. Some films that don't use real time are One day and Pulp Fiction.
  • Closure: This refers to whether all the problems that arise are sorted by the end of the media type, so in Run Lola run the problem is sorted by the end and were essentially given a happy ending. In real life we do not have any closure.
  • Enigma: The enigma is the actual problems that need to be solved, in run lola run the problem is that they need to find money to pay back the mob.

Rough cut of our music video and survey

This is the rough unfinished version of our Music video, after uploading this we conducted a survey on the initial thoughts on our video these are the results:

The survey
Although there weren't many people who participated in the survey, there is enough responses to make a clear distinction of whether the video was popular or not.
The questions we asked includes:
  1. On a scale of 1-10 (Ten being the most enjoyable), How much did you enjoy watching the music video?
  2. Is there anything you would change? why?
  3. Do you feel that the song went with the video? If Not Why?
  4. Do you feel the lip synching was well done?
  5. Do you feel the editing of the music video was well paced?
  6. Do You feel the camera work was creative?
  7. Do you feel you got an message from the music video? If so, what is the message ?
Our Responses
Question 1
9/9 participants answered this question, we mostly got positive results as we didn't get any results below 6 , so in all honesty I think that this was really positive feedback, from the information we do have I believe we may have to improve some parts of the video but overall most people found it really enjoyable, 8.33 is a really good average considering the results could be a lot worser, it could of been totally unliked .

Question 2

I really like results such as these, as much as I love every positive comment, I like constructive criticism as it allows us to concentrate on those comments and change or notice these problems in the video. Overall the participants are really happy with the video saying there is "nothing" they would change, and others gave us some minor things we can change such as "colour correction" an work on the actions of the person who is lip syncing, although I will take this, the parts she is singing, is lip syncing toward the camera as she knows being filmed in her studio, she's making a point and showing her message.

Question 3

The participants totally liked how the song and video fitted together as out of the poll it was 100%, since there was no "no's"therefore there is no whys.

Question 4

Im impressed with this response as no-one said no, of course there was one "could be improved" which allows us to zone in on the problems we have with lip syncing, but due to the 8 yes's we do have it shows our lip syncing is very well done.

Question 5

7/9 of the responses said they liked the pace of the editing, this means that the fact that our music beat fits the editing works really well, In spite of this there was 2 responses that said that the editing was too slow, we will take this into account but our song is already sad we didn't want it to be too boring by having slow editing also as this is still the rough copy we may change the video. Overall this was really good feedback

Question 6
I totally agree with the people who said it could be improved, I feel that as we are not at the end of the filming stage therefore we can take these comments into account and make them more interesting, for example we were thinking of taking some shots in London and go to more exciting locations. Although I don't disagree with the people who think our editing is creative I just feel that it has more potential. With this information we can review our shots  and see how we can improve them.

Question 7
I am really happy with this response because its what the respondents have described is the message we are trying to put across so i'm pleased with that, only thing is if that 1 person did not understand the video could there be others who don't but the way to change that is to hope that it is the minority who did not get the message of the video.

Pete Fraser's Music cover task (TBC)

In todays lesson we were told to look at the media examiner Peter Frasers Blog as he had posted a exercise that allowed you to make the front cover of a Digipack for a fake band/artist.

The Process
The process is actually called The Internet CD cover meme
