As the film industry has its Major and independent studios, the music industry also has its own major and independent record Labels
Label: A company that produces and sells records, CDs and recordings of a song.

Major Record Labels

The Music industry is now dominated by four major multi-national corporations, these are :

Universal
Sony Music
Warner Brothers
EMI

These are referred to as "The Majors". These record labels are usually backed by conglomerates with stakes/ investments in other industries such as; film, TV and Electronics. for example Universal.

Universal Music
Universal Music was a subsidiary of Vivendi, Vivendi is a French multinational mass media and telecommunication company. Universal music is located in Santa Monica, California and had 6,967 employees in 2010. Universal Music have mostly stuck to there name and have signed many multicultural artists to their label.

As you can see the signed Artists are mostly well known and are high contenders in the charts, this means that the artists that are signed have a high track record for hits and appeal to all genres, such as Kat De Luna, Queen, ABBA, Will I am, Robbie Williams and All American Rejects these artists are guaranteed to promote the company and bring profit.

Major-Independent record labels
Most of these "Majors" own, or license, a series of smaller subsidiary companies in order to reach different kinds of audiences in different kinds of genre. such as:

Island
Syco
RCA
Virgin

Companies such as theses are known as "Major independents".

Island Records
Island records is a subsidiary of Universal records, it was founded in 1999 and like its parent company it has various different genre artists but a smaller artist list and although the genre is different it has a common theme of music and look, also all the artists signed to this label are also well known and successful especially Lawson who have very quickly become successful and are bound to bring profit .Its headquarters are in New York.
Universal Music group ended up merging two of its companies together making it Island Def Jam Music Group (IDJGM). In 2012 IDJGM became the number-one Rythmic label for having 7 number one's from Rihanna, Kanye west, Ne-yo and Jay-Z

Independent record labels

There are a huge number of small companies with little or no financial connection to the majors, these companies often concentrate on a small number of acts, within specialised niches in the industry.It is often that record labels start out as "independents", but then are bought by a major record label and then become "major-independents".
They are named "independents", such as "domino records" which has been highly successful

Domino records

Domino Records was founded in 1993 by Laurence Bell and Jacqui Rice, the genre they normally sign is Indie Rock and Pop artists/ acts. Domino records is still in London as they first originated there but there are extensions of the record label in New York, Germany and France also they have made a subsidiary label called Geographic Music which releases more contemporary british and world music.
