Andrew Goodwin theory (TBC)

Andrew Goodwin is the author of Dancing in the Distraction factory (1992) the book has identified the following things in the music video industry.

Goodwin expressed that music video tend to demonstrate genre characteristics for example a stage performance in a metal video, or a dance routine for a girl/boy band.
this is present through girl band s such as girls aloud and N Sync.

Boy and Girl Bands: Selling the genre
Normallyin bands there is a relationship between the lyrics, music and visuals, they are either:
  • Illustrative
  • amplifying
  • contradicting
Record labels tend to demand lots of close ups of the artist so they can create a visual style which consists of a series of motif's that are developed to create a style for the artist that will be desirable to the public, as music videos are made to demonstrate genre characteristics. Also there is frequently a reference to being looked at such as through multiple screens such as a camera or telescope, but their is always a voyeuristic treatment of the female body, usually there is often a inter-textual reference, to either a film or a programme and many more.
We can use this theory to analyse and break down many celebrities and artists, by considering whether the video is primarily performance based, narrative based or concept based and how elements of each are used in it.

Video and Lyrics
There are three ways a song will be promoted  through its music videos, these are:

  • Illustrate: Music videos frequently use a set of images to illustrate the meaning of the lyrics and the genre, this is the most common especially with lyric video's.
  • Amplify:This is similar to repeatability, the meanings and the
